Shop Stewards are not only important to the daily operations of the union, they are also co-workers who care deeply for worker rights. They are usually the first people to learn of a member's grievance. They take time out of their busy schedules to attend union meetings, to study their contract so they are skilled at interpreting it, and to meet with union staff.ParticipateUnions are among the most democratic organizations in the world. It's at union meetings that members learn how their dues are used. Who their representatives are and what the union does. When members do not bother attending meetings, they weaken their union. It goes without saying that you must encourage them to attend all meetings. Keep your members up to date on the latest developments. Encourage them to make their views known.   If you are interested in learning how you can become a shop steward, please contact your Union Executive, Steward or the Union Office for more information.
